Traun

Skip Traun unless you live in Linz and need a quiet afternoon by a pond or a castle restaurant: half a day, no overnight.

Traun is a commuter suburb of Linz with a small castle, a pond for sunbathing and a few decent eateries. It has no major sight that draws a traveller from outside the region. Use it as a low-key half-day break if you are based in Linz and want a picnic or a castle meal; otherwise skip it for Wels or Steyr.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Austria ↗Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Austria ↗Motorways and expressways need a vignette (digital or sticker); driving on them without one brings on-the-spot fines.
  • Austria ↗Winter tyres or chains are required in winter conditions; hire cars from outside Austria may not have them fitted.

Safety

Traun is a safe suburb. Standard precautions apply at night; the main risk is missing the last tram to Linz.
  • Oedter See is a small pond, not a lake: no swimming infrastructure, just grass and sunbathing.
  • Schloss Traun restaurant is upscale and pricey; check opening hours in advance.
  • Public transport stops early on Sundays; check the last connection back to Linz.
