Give Pittsboro one night or a half-day: the courthouse square and Carolina Tiger Rescue are the draw, and you need a car to reach either.
Pittsboro is the seat of Chatham County, a small town of about 4,300 people on the Haw River, roughly halfway between Chapel Hill and Sanford on US 15-501. Its historic district centres on an 1881 courthouse, and a rescued-big-cat sanctuary sits a few minutes east. There is no rail or bus service worth planning around, so this is a car stop, not a base.

A car is effectively required. US 15-501 runs through downtown and US 64 passes just north. Downtown is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, but Carolina Tiger Rescue, Bynum and the river trailheads are 5–15 min by car with no useful bus. Rideshare exists but waits can be long outside the centre.

- The Lower Haw River Trail and Bynum river access are muddy after rain, and poison ivy grows along the paths.
- Swimming near Bynum Dam is risky: stay well clear of the dam and the current above it.
