Pittsboro is the seat of Chatham County, a small town of about 4,300 people on the Haw River, roughly halfway between Chapel Hill and Sanford on US 15-501. Its historic district centres on an 1881 courthouse, and a rescued-big-cat sanctuary sits a few minutes east. There is no rail or bus service worth planning around, so this is a car stop, not a base.

Get around
A car is effectively required. US 15-501 runs through downtown and US 64 passes just north. Downtown is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, but Carolina Tiger Rescue, Bynum and the river trailheads are 5–15 min by car with no useful bus. Rideshare exists but waits can be long outside the centre.
