Matsusaka松阪

Go for one night if you want a Matsusaka beef meal and the castle ruins; otherwise pass through on the Kintetsu line between Nagoya and Ise.

Matsusaka is a merchant town in central Mie, halfway between Nagoya and Ise, and the name on Japan's most expensive wagyu. The sights — castle ruins, a samurai street, two small museums — sit within 15 minutes' walk of the station, so a single night covers it. Come for the beef, not for a sightseeing list.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by any standard; the real risks are the unrailed castle walls after dark, erratic local driving, and 'snack' bars with no posted prices.
  • The castle ruins have steep walls and no guard rails: do not walk the edges after dark.
  • Bars with 'snack' in the name can charge very high prices; ask the total before you sit.
  • Atago-machi is the red-light district; it is not dangerous, but expect soliciting — a simple no is enough.
  • Local driving can be erratic on narrow, dark roads.
