  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Jasper is a town of about 4,700 people inside Jasper National Park, four hours north of Banff and four hours west of Edmonton. It is quieter than Banff, the town itself is walkable in 15 minutes, and everything worth seeing — lakes, canyons, the tramway, the Columbia Icefield — is a drive away. Two nights is the practical minimum; three if you want a hike and the Icefields Parkway without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No public transit. The townsite is flat and walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. For the park you need a car, a rental bike in summer, or a tour bus — Brewster uses large coaches, SunDog smaller vans, at similar prices. Taxis are limited; Caribou Cabs is the local operator.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Maligne Lake and Spirit Island

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive Highway 16 east then Maligne Road, about 1 h; tour buses run from town

Go early: the parking lot fills by mid-morning in July and August. Cruise tickets sell out.

Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min each way

Drive the Icefields Parkway south, about 1 h 30 min

Glacier bus and Skywalk are timed, ticketed and weather-dependent.

Miette Hot Springs

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive Highway 16 east then Miette Road, about 1 h

Seasonal opening, roughly May to mid-October.

Mount Robson Provincial Park

caution

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive Highway 16 west into British Columbia, about 1 h

The peak is often in cloud; the visitor centre is the reliable stop.

Banff and Lake Louise

overnight

Door to door: 4–5 h by road

Icefields Parkway south by car, or Brewster Express in season

No direct train. See Banff to Jasper for the drive.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Jasper (Connaught Drive and Patricia Street)

Walk to restaurants, shops and the train station; most hotels and motels sit here.

Lakeside and out-of-town (Patricia Lake, Pyramid Lake, Old Lodge Road)

Cabins and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge; quieter, needs a car or taxi.

Campgrounds south of town (Whistlers, Wapiti, Wabasso)

Parks Canada sites 3–17 km south on Highway 93/93A; book early for summer.

Watch out

Safety

Jasper is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are wildlife, mountain weather that turns in an hour, and long drives with no phone signal.
  • A park pass is required for anyone stopping in Jasper National Park, including the town; through-drivers pay nothing.
  • Bears and elk: use bear-proof bins, keep food in the car, and give wildlife 30 m or more.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the Icefields Parkway and around Maligne Lake.
  • Summer accommodation sells out months ahead; late bookings mean Hinton, 1 h east.
  • Winter driving on Highway 16 and the parkway needs winter tyres and daylight planning.
