South Burlington
Base here for cheap beds and free parking next to Burlington: 2 nights by car, 1 if you are only using BTV airport.
South Burlington is Vermont's second-largest city and has no downtown: it is a strip of hotels, malls and roads wrapped around Burlington International Airport (BTV), 10–15 minutes by car from downtown Burlington. Travellers use it for cheaper rooms, free hotel parking and airport access, then drive north for the lake, restaurants and nightlife. Without a car it is a poor base — the sidewalks exist but the distances and traffic do not invite walking.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: I-89 exit 14, US 2 and US 7 all cross the city, and downtown Burlington is 10–15 minutes away. CCTA buses serve Shelburne Road, Williston Road, University Mall and the airport, but frequencies are low and stops are far apart. Some roads have bike lanes; Williston Road is not one to ride. Avoid Williston and Shelburne Roads at rush hour.

Williston Road (US 2) near the airport
The main hotel strip: Doubletree, Holiday Inn, Best Western Windjammer, plus the Windjammer restaurant. Walkable to the airport, not to Burlington.
Shelburne Road (US 7), south end
Generally the cheapest rooms (Comfort Suites, Smart Suites, Holiday Inn Express, Quality Inn near Exit 13) and the shortest drive to Shelburne and the lake.
Dorset Street / University Mall
Chain shops, Healthy Living market and Dorset Street restaurants; central for drivers, no nightlife.

- No downtown and little nightlife — plan evenings in Burlington or Winooski.
- Winter driving: snow tyres or all-seasons, and allow extra time on I-89.
- Hotel rates spike on University of Vermont graduation, parents' weekends and fall foliage weekends; book ahead.
