South Burlington is Vermont's second-largest city and has no downtown: it is a strip of hotels, malls and roads wrapped around Burlington International Airport (BTV), 10–15 minutes by car from downtown Burlington. Travellers use it for cheaper rooms, free hotel parking and airport access, then drive north for the lake, restaurants and nightlife. Without a car it is a poor base — the sidewalks exist but the distances and traffic do not invite walking.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: I-89 exit 14, US 2 and US 7 all cross the city, and downtown Burlington is 10–15 minutes away. CCTA buses serve Shelburne Road, Williston Road, University Mall and the airport, but frequencies are low and stops are far apart. Some roads have bike lanes; Williston Road is not one to ride. Avoid Williston and Shelburne Roads at rush hour.
