Mary is a city in southeast Turkmenistan and the base for the ruins of ancient Merv, once one of the largest cities in the world on the Silk Road. Merv is a set of walls, fortresses and mausoleums spread over a large area, including the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum. Independent travel is restricted; visitors normally travel with a guide and a visa arranged in advance. It fits a trip as one day of ruins after Ashgabat or before the Uzbek border.

Crime affecting visitors is uncommon, but the main risks are legal: follow photography, permit and behaviour rules and stay with your guide.
  • Bring water, a hat and sun protection; the Merv site has little shade and midsummer is very hot.
