Mary is a city in southeast Turkmenistan and the base for the ruins of ancient Merv, once a major Silk Road city. The site is a set of walls and fortresses over a large area. Visitors normally travel with a guide arranged in advance.

Language

Turkmen, a Turkic language close to Azerbaijani and Turkish, is the state language, written in Latin script since the 1990s. Russian is understood by many older and urban people. English is rare outside tour guides and top hotels.
