  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
  • Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.

Vila Velha is the old capital of Espírito Santo, founded in 1535, and now the most populous city in the Vitória metro area. Its draw is a short list: the Convento da Penha on its hill, a long beach strip from Praia da Costa south to Itapoã, and easy access to Vitória across the Terceira Ponte. Most of the city is ordinary apartment blocks, so plan two nights of beach and one half-day of history, not a week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Urban buses converge on Terminal Vila Velha in the centre, including services across to Vitória; the airport bus is line 507. The beach strip is walkable but long — Praia da Costa to Itapoã is roughly 3 km. Ride-hailing apps work well and are the easy option at night.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Vitória

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Bus from Terminal Vila Velha over the Terceira Ponte, or a ride-hailing car

Convento da Penha in the morning, then the old centre and bayfront in Vitória.

Guarapari

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus south along the coast

Beach resort town with a busy summer scene; a full day or an overnight.

Domingos Martins

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus into the mountains from the Vitória/Vila Velha terminals

German-immigrant mountain town and Pedra Azul; better with one night.

Santa Leopoldina

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus via the Santa Maria de Jetibá road

Colonial river town; thin bus frequency, so confirm the return.

Anchieta

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus south along the BR-101

Jesuit history and beaches; long for a day return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Praia da Costa

Beachfront towers, restaurants and the corniche; best for a first stay and walking to dinner.

Itapoã

Quieter continuation of the same sand, 2–3 km south; good for longer beach stays.

Centro / Terminal Vila Velha

Cheapest and most practical for buses to Vitória and the airport; little of interest at night.

Watch out

Safety

Treat it like any Brazilian metro area: daylight beach time, ride-hailing at night, nothing valuable on the sand. The 2017 police-strike violence is long over, but street robbery remains the everyday risk.
  • Beaches near the bay mouth carry sewage and mining-runoff warnings at times: check local flags and ask before swimming.
  • The Morro do Moreno trail is rough in places; wear shoes with grip and do not climb it alone at dusk.
  • Street crime is a real risk as in any Brazilian metro area: carry a phone you can lose, and avoid empty stretches of sand after dark.
  • Summer downpours (Dec–Mar) can flood streets quickly; keep plans flexible.
