Vila Velha

Vila Velha is the old capital of Espírito Santo, founded in 1535, and now the most populous city in the Vitória metro area. Its draw is a short list: the Convento da Penha on its hill, a long beach strip from Praia da Costa south to Itapoã, and easy access to Vitória across the Terceira Ponte. Most of the city is ordinary apartment blocks, so plan two nights of beach and one half-day of history, not a week.

- Summer downpours (Dec–Mar) can flood streets quickly; keep plans flexible.
