Bandipurबन्दीपुर

One night on the Kathmandu–Pokhara road: walk the car-free streets, see the Himalayan view from Tudikhel, then move on.

Bandipur is a restored Newari hill town on the Prithvi Highway, halfway between Kathmandu and Pokhara. The old bazaar is pedestrian-only, the views from Tudikhel stretch across the Himalayas on clear days, and the town is quiet enough to feel like a break from the road. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop.

Rules in force · 6
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Nepal ↗Get visa information only from the Department of Immigration; visa-service lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules differ by nationality.
  • Nepal ↗At stupas walk clockwise; at temples and homes remove shoes where there is a rack or a raised floor; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Nepal ↗Carry Nepalese rupees in small notes: many stalls, taxis and tea shops are cash-only, and shops rarely take foreign notes.
  • Nepal ↗Strikes (bandh) and protests can close roads without notice: check the news and your hotel the night before any airport or highway day.

Getting around

Walk. The old bazaar is car-free; the whole village is small enough to cover on foot in 20 minutes. For Siddha Gufa or Gurunche Dada, hire a local guide or take a jeep from Dumre.

Watch out

Safety

Bandipur is safe for tourists. The main risks are leeches on monsoon hikes, loose dogs at night, and the steep road from Dumre – drive carefully.
  • The Himalayan view from Tudikhel is weather-dependent: check the forecast before you plan a sunrise visit.
  • Bandipur is on a ridge; the walk up from Dumre is steep if you arrive by bus.
  • ATMs are limited; carry enough NPR for meals and accommodation.
  • Dashain (September–October) brings crowds and higher prices; book ahead.
