Williams Lake is a town of about 11,000 in the Cariboo, on Highway 97 between Quesnel and 100 Mile House and at the junction with Highway 20 to the Chilcotin and the Central Coast. It is a working forestry, ranching and mining town, not a resort: the draw is the rodeo, the cowboy museum, the river valley trail and the canyon country west of town. Most travellers pass through on the way north or west; the ones who stop get cheap beds and open country.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: sights are spread out and Highway 20 west has no bus. BC Transit runs several town routes Monday to Saturday, no Sunday service. Two taxi firms cover the town and the airport. Everything central is walkable in 15–20 minutes.

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are the drive (wildlife, ice, wildfire smoke) and long distances with thin services. Tell someone your route if you head west on Highway 20.
  • Wildfire season: evacuation orders have hit this region before (2017). Check BC Wildfire Service and DriveBC before driving in Jul–Aug.
  • Winter driving: Highway 97 and Highway 20 can be icy and snowy Nov–Mar; carry winter tyres and check road conditions.
  • Wildlife on the highway, especially deer and moose at dawn and dusk.
  • Cell coverage drops on Highway 20 west of Riske Creek; download offline maps.
  • Small-town bars and the casino: keep to posted hours; taxis are limited late at night.
