Stanwell Park

Give Stanwell Park one full day plus a night if you want Bald Hill at sunrise; otherwise it is a 2–3 hour stop between Sydney and Wollongong.

Stanwell Park is a small Illawarra valley village of about 1,400 people between the escarpment and the sea, 60 km south of Sydney on the South Coast Line. The draw is the coast: Bald Hill Lookout above Sea Cliff Bridge, the beach, and the 1910s brick railway viaduct over Stanwell Creek Gorge. It is a suburb of Wollongong, not a destination in its own right, so most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop on the drive or train ride south.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk. TfNSW bus route 15 links Stanwell Tops, Stanwell Park Station and Helensburgh. The South Coast Line stops at Stanwell Park, Otford and Coalcliff. Lawrence Hargrave Drive is the coast road; the M1 Princes Motorway is the fast route and the exit puts you on Lawrence Hargrave Drive about 10 minutes from the village.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village. The real risks are the surf at Stanwell Park Beach, the steep and partly unpaved walk up to Bald Hill, and the coastal road: drive and swim with normal care.
  • Bald Hill Lookout is awkward on foot: the climb from the village is steep and there is no pavement the whole way.
  • The old Otford railway tunnel runs 1.57 km (1 mi) one way, but the northern section is private property and the tunnel can be closed at any time.
  • The railway viaduct is best seen from a train; there is no easy walking access.
  • Lawrence Hargrave Drive is a coastal road with cyclists and blind bends: drive it in daylight.
  • Swim between the flags at Stanwell Park Beach; the surf can be strong.
