Osnabrück is a mid-sized Lower Saxon city of about 156,000 people in a valley between the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest, and a rail junction where the Amsterdam–Berlin and Hamburg–Cologne lines cross. Two thirds of the centre was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt close to the medieval plan, so the old town reads as a compact, walkable whole rather than a monument strip. It is the Friedensstadt, the city of peace, where part of the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in 1648, and the birthplace of painter Felix Nussbaum and novelist Erich Maria Remarque. Most travellers pass through on the way to Hamburg, Cologne or the Netherlands; the city earns a day, not a week.

Getting around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. City and regional buses run from the ZOB beside the main station; buy tickets from the driver or from machines at Neumarkt, and drivers give change. Night buses run Friday and Saturday. Bicycles are the local default on red-marked lanes, but those lanes are narrow, at street level and shared with buses and taxis, and parts of the centre ban bikes — walk the bike if unsure.
