Jeonju is the capital of North Jeolla and the birthplace of the Joseon royal clan, best known for its hanok village of over 800 traditional houses and for bibimbap. It is a compact city: the hanok village, Gyeonggijeon, Jeondong Cathedral and the food streets sit within a 20-minute walk of each other. Most travellers come for one night from Seoul and leave the next afternoon.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: hanok village, Gyeonggijeon, Jeondong Cathedral and Nambu Market are within 20 minutes on foot. City buses cost ₩1,300 and line 1000 links the station, bus terminals and the hanok village. Taxis drop at ₩4,300; station to hanok village is about ₩7,600. Kakao T Bike e-bikes cost ₩1,130 for the first 15 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Jeonju is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are summer downpours, uneven hanok lanes, and drinking areas near Jeonbuk National University where you should watch your bag.
  • July and August bring the heaviest rain of the year; pack for it or shift the trip.
  • Hanok guesthouses have thin walls and floor sleeping; check bedding and bathroom before booking.
  • The hanok village is a residential area: keep noise down after about 22:00.
  • Some restaurants close one day a week; check before you walk across town.
