Sonsonate
Use Sonsonate as a 1-night bus-hub stop or a Semana Santa base, not a sightseeing base: the colonial core is 2–3 hours, and Izalco and the Ruta de las Flores are the real draw.

- Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
- Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
- Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
- El Salvador ↗Check entry rules for your passport with El Salvador's migration authority or a Salvadoran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
- El Salvador ↗A state of exception has been in force since 2022, suspending some legal protections: carry your passport or a copy, cooperate at checkpoints and avoid photographing police, military or prisons.
- El Salvador ↗Carry US dollars in small notes; bitcoin acceptance has been voluntary since 2025 and few businesses take it.
Sonsonate is southwestern El Salvador's transport hub: 73,000 people, a big chicken-bus terminal, and a colonial centre of low adobe houses around Rafael Campo Park. Coffee, dairy and sugar pay the bills. Holy Week here is among the country's most solemn, but on an ordinary week the city is a practical stop between San Salvador, Acajutla and the Ruta de las Flores rather than a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Getting around
The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. Chicken buses and taxis cover the rest; Terminal de Sonsonate on Calle a Nahuilingo has routes to almost anywhere in the country, with route numbers on signs hung from the ceiling. Restrooms cost about US$0.50. For Izalco, Acajutla or the Ruta de las Flores, take a bus from that terminal rather than a city taxi.

Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Izalco
goDoor to door: About 45 min
Chicken bus from Terminal de Sonsonate, about 20–30 min
Colonial town with its own heavy Holy Week; pair with the volcano views.
Acajutla
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Bus from Terminal de Sonsonate, about 30–40 min
Working port with seafood and black-sand beaches; go for lunch, not for a swim-and-stay day.
Apaneca and Concepción de Ataco
overnightDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Bus toward Ahuachapán, then local buses; or drive the Ruta de las Flores
Too slow as a return day trip: sleep in the Ruta de las Flores instead.
Santa Ana
goDoor to door: About 2 h
Bus from Terminal de Sonsonate, about 1.5 h
Better base for the volcano and Coatepeque; move bags rather than day-trip.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Around Rafael Campo Park and the centre
Walk to the cathedral, town hall and Mercado Central; the most useful base for one night without a car.
CA 12-S and the highway strip
Chain and mid-range hotels with parking on the eastern edge; convenient if you arrive by car or leave early.
El Pilar neighbourhood
Oldest quarter, adobe houses and two historic temples; quiet, few beds, check availability.

Watch out
Safety
- Chicken buses are cheap but slow and crowded: keep bags on your lap and expect over 2 hours from San Salvador.
- Semana Santa and the 25 Jan–2 Feb festivities fill every bed: book weeks ahead or stay in Santa Ana instead.
- Rainy-season downpours flood streets quickly; carry a light rain shell May–Oct.
- Use registered taxis or ride-hailing after dark; ask the fare before you get in.
- The Museo del Ferrocarril and some churches keep irregular hours: check locally before travelling for them.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for SAL: shuttle or taxi to Terminal Occidente, Ruta 205 timing, and a late-arrival fallback in San Salvador.
- Four walking clusters with anchors: Rafael Campo Park, El Pilar, the market, and the railway monument on the San Salvador highway.
- Place pages with verified hours (cathedral, El Pilar, Museo del Ferrocarril, Mercado Central) and eat pages with last orders.
- Semana Santa and 25 Jan–2 Feb fixtures so the page can go green before the two weeks that matter.
