Bovec is a 1,600-person town on the Soča river in the Julian Alps, about 3.5 h by bus from Ljubljana. It is an activity base, not a sightseeing town: white-water rafting, kayaking, canyoning and hiking fill the days, and the Kanin cable car runs in season. Two nights covers the river and one walk; three if you add the Vršič Pass drive or a Via ferrata. A hire car makes the valley far easier than the twice-daily bus.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 15 minutes. For the river, waterfalls and passes you need a car, a bike (rentals about €20/day) or an organised tour with pickup. Buses run from Ljubljana twice a day on weekdays, about 3.5 h and about €13.60; trains reach Most na Soči, then a bus covers the last 40 km. Trail maps sell at the tourist information centre for about €7.

Watch out

Safety

Bovec is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are the river, the mountains and the roads. Book activities with licensed guides, wear the helmet, and treat the Soča as cold and fast even in August.
  • Rafting, canyoning and kayaking go with licensed operators only; check the guide's licence and that helmets and buoyancy aids are provided.
  • The Kanin cable car does not run in the off season: check the schedule before you plan a day around it.
  • Signs at Virje waterfall contradict each other on swimming; the spring water stays near 5 °C even in summer, so treat a dip as cold-water swimming.
  • There is no public laundrette in Bovec: do laundry before you arrive or confirm your accommodation has a washing machine.
  • Mountain weather turns fast; carry a shell and check the forecast before any ridge walk.
