Witney is a small Oxfordshire market town on the A40, 12.5 miles west of Oxford, built on the wool and blanket trade. The centre is compact and walkable in an afternoon: a church, a blanket hall, a museum and a brewery tour. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Cotswolds or use it as a cheaper bed for Oxford. Two nights covers the town and one day trip; one night is enough if you only want the centre.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable; even the outer estates are about 15 minutes on foot. Buses S1 and S2 run to Oxford, and the 853 continues west to Burford, Cheltenham and Gloucester. The town has no railway station: the nearest is Long Hanborough, about 6 miles northeast, with limited services.

A low-crime market town; the real risks are dark lanes after pub closing, fast traffic on the A40 and unlit paths along the Windrush.
