Witney
One night is enough: use Witney as a Cotswolds base or an Oxford side trip, not a destination on its own.
Witney is a small Oxfordshire market town on the A40, 12.5 miles west of Oxford, built on the wool and blanket trade. The centre is compact and walkable in an afternoon: a church, a blanket hall, a museum and a brewery tour. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Cotswolds or use it as a cheaper bed for Oxford. Two nights covers the town and one day trip; one night is enough if you only want the centre.

- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off

- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No train station in town; the nearest is Long Hanborough, 6 miles away with a thin timetable.
- Buses to Oxford can be slow at peak times; check the last return before a late evening.
- Some pubs and the museum keep short or seasonal hours: check before you walk out.
A low-crime market town; the real risks are dark lanes after pub closing, fast traffic on the A40 and unlit paths along the Windrush.
