Bayham is a rural municipality in Elgin County on the Lake Erie shore, made up of small communities: Port Burwell, Straffordville, Vienna, Eden and others. Almost everything a visitor wants sits in Port Burwell, the lakeside village with a submarine, a lighthouse museum, a theatre and a provincial park beach. It is a one-day stop, best paired with Port Stanley or Aylmer rather than treated as a base.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: the communities are spread over farmland and there is no local bus. The nearest bus and train stations are about 50 km away in Ingersoll. From Toronto it is about 200 km: Highway 401 west, then south on Culloden Line (County Road 10) and east on County Road 30, or County Road 19 south into Port Burwell. In the village itself you can walk between the submarine, lighthouse, beach and restaurants in 10–15 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe: this is farmland and a small lakeside village. The real risks are the lake (cold water, no lifeguard outside peak season), highway driving on two-lane county roads, and ticks in long grass in spring and early summer.
  • Most attractions run mid-May to early September only; outside that window expect closed doors.
  • Submarine interior tours are not open to children under 8, and reservations are strongly recommended.
  • The lighthouse interior has been closed to the public; check before you count on going up.
  • Summer weekends fill the provincial park and village parking; arrive before 10:00.
  • No local transit: without a car you are limited to the village.
