Stresa is a 5,000-person town on the Borromean Bay of Lake Maggiore, an hour by train from Milan. It is a base for three small islands with palaces and gardens, a cable car up Mount Mottarone, and lake ferries to Verbania and the Swiss end of the lake. Two nights covers it; one night is a squeeze.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Navigazione Laghi ferries link the main dock, Carciano, Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre; buy tickets inside the ferry terminal. Two taxi ranks: railway station and ferry terminal. Bikes can be rented. A car helps for Mottarone and the villages, but parking in the centre is limited.

Watch out

Safety

Violent crime is close to nil in a town this size. The real risks are the ferry-ticket touts outside the terminal, fake stamps, and the evening ferry gap if you dine on an island.
  • Touts outside the ferry terminal in sailor hats sell lake-taxi trips at inflated prices and claim the ferry is dearer. Buy ferry tickets inside the terminal building only.
  • Some shops selling postcards also sell 'Friend Post' stickers instead of real stamps; cards often never arrive. Buy stamps at a tabaccheria or the post office.
  • Isola Bella and Isola Madre palaces and gardens open late Mar–late Oct only; outside that window the islands are a walk, not a visit.
  • The Mottarone cable car has been closed since a 2021 accident: check the official site before planning the trip.
  • Lake ferries stop in the evening; a late dinner on Isola dei Pescatori needs a water taxi back.
