Chavín de Huántar is a town of about 9,000 people at 3,137 m and the site of a pre-Inca ceremonial centre built from roughly 900 BCE, UNESCO-listed since 1985. The ruins, the national museum and a megalithic wall sit within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas, so the town works as one overnight stop rather than a base. Most travellers arrive from Huaraz, 104 km away on a paved road, and the altitude is the thing that catches people out.
