Chavín de Huántar
Go for one night, not a day trip: the Huaraz bus takes 2 h each way and the ruins close at 16:00, so a same-day return leaves you about 3 h on site.
Chavín de Huántar is a town of about 9,000 people at 3,137 m and the site of a pre-Inca ceremonial centre built from roughly 900 BCE, UNESCO-listed since 1985. The ruins, the national museum and a megalithic wall sit within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas, so the town works as one overnight stop rather than a base. Most travellers arrive from Huaraz, 104 km away on a paved road, and the altitude is the thing that catches people out.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; one cheek kiss among acquaintances; avoid: Skipping greetings
- Food pride: Ask about local dishes; avoid: Comparing pisco or ceviche unfavourably with Chile's
- Photos: Ask and pay if asked; avoid: Photographing people without asking
- Politics: Listen; avoid: Taking sides in protests
Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: the town sits at 3,137 m. Sleep in Huaraz or Lima first, drink water, and treat the first day as a light one.
- The site is closed Mondays and shuts at 16:00; last entry is earlier than you think — check before you travel.
- Rainy season (Dec–Mar) brings mud on trails and occasional road delays on the Huaraz road.
- Bring soles in cash: card acceptance in town is limited and ATMs are scarce.
- Trails to Pójoc and Yurac Machay are unmarked in places; go with a local guide.
Chavín is a small, quiet town and the main risks are altitude, weather and unmarked trails rather than crime. Keep valuables out of sight on buses, carry cash, and don't hike alone above town.
