  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Kapuskasing is a pulp-and-paper town of about 8,300 people on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Great Clay Belt of Northern Ontario, 2 h 45 min by bus from Timmins and about 3 h 30 min by car from Hearst. It is flat, forested and cold: moose, black bear and lynx country, with walleye and pike in the lakes. There is no scheduled air service, so you arrive by car or by Ontario Northland bus. One night covers the museum, the cheese shop and the mill; two nights if you want to fish or drive out to the Reesor Siding monument.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are winter cold, moose on Highway 11 after dark and long gaps between services on the corridor. 911 works everywhere.
  • No scheduled flights into YYU: do not book a trip assuming you can fly in.
  • Winter temperatures can reach −40 °C; frostbite risk on exposed skin in minutes. Check the forecast before any winter drive.
  • Highway 11 is the only road link; moose on the road at dusk and after dark are a real hazard.
  • Ontario Northland runs several days per week, not daily: check the timetable before you commit to a date.
