- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- Midwest ↗Outside Chicago, public transport is thin; a car is the practical way between cities and parks.
- Midwest ↗Chicago-area tollways are electronic; rent a transponder or pay online after the rental.
- Midwest ↗Listed prices exclude state and city sales tax; restaurant bills add 18–22% tip.
- Ohio ↗The Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90) is a toll road. Cash lanes are limited; use E-ZPass or the Pay-by-Plate option if you have a US rental car.
- Ohio ↗State Highway Patrol enforces speed limits strictly on interstates. Cruise control is recommended for long stretches.
- Ohio Erie shore west ↗Island ferries carry cars but fill in summer; walk-on passengers rarely need a reservation.
- Ohio Erie shore west ↗EV chargers are sparse outside Toledo and Sandusky; plan charging before the islands.

West Sister Island is a national wildlife refuge in western Lake Erie, about 8 mi (13 km) northeast of the Ohio mainland and roughly 8 mi north of Port Clinton. It holds the largest heron and cormorant rookery on the lake — great blue herons, great egrets, black-crowned night herons and cormorants nesting in the trees — and it is the only designated wilderness area in Ohio. It is also closed: the whole island is refuge land, public landing is prohibited year-round, and the only permits issued are for research. So the practical visit is a boat trip around the coast with binoculars, or a mainland day at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, which manages the island. The 1800s lighthouse, the island's only structure, is the landmark to look for from the water and, on a clear day, from the Sandusky and Cedar Point shore.

Why go
- It is the largest heron and cormorant rookery on Lake Erie, and you can watch the colony from the water without landing.
- The 1800s lighthouse still stands — the only structure left on the island — and is visible from the mainland on a clear day.
- The island sits in the Battle of Lake Erie story: Commodore Perry reported his 1813 victory near here.
- A boat trip around the coast is a genuine birding outing, with thousands of nesting pairs in season.

Park rules
- No landing
- The entire island is a national wildlife refuge and is closed to the public at all times. Trespassing can mean arrest and a fine.
- No drones
- Flying over a refuge disturbs nesting birds and is not permitted without authorisation (check).
- Keep your distance by boat
- Approach slowly, stay off the shoreline, and leave if birds start flushing from nests.
- No collecting
- Plants, eggs, feathers and anything else on the island are protected; take nothing.
- Unexploded ordnance
- The island was used for bombing and artillery practice in the 1940s; wartime debris may remain, which is a further reason to stay off it (check).

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- There is no accessible route on the island because there is no public access at all.
- Boat viewing depends on the operator; ask about boarding ramps and seating before booking.
- The mainland refuges near Port Clinton have driving routes suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Watch from a distance: flushing nesting birds costs chicks their lives on hot or cold days.
- Choose operators who cut engines and drift rather than circling close for photos.
- Support the refuge by visiting the mainland units and their visitor centre instead of pushing for a landing.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter West Sister Island?
Nothing, because there is no public entry. The island is a national wildlife refuge closed to visitors year-round, and no ticket exists. The only permits are research permits from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. If you want to see it, budget for a boat: a birding cruise is roughly US$40–90 per person, or US$300–700 for a private half-day charter (2026 estimate).
What are the best hikes in West Sister Island?
There are none open to the public. The island has no trails, no infrastructure and dense poison ivy, and landing is prohibited. Walk instead at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge near Port Clinton, which has marsh trails and a wildlife drive, or on the Lake Erie islands.
When is the best time to visit West Sister Island?
For viewing from a boat, May and June, when the heron, egret and cormorant colony is at full activity and the lake is usually calm in the morning. April and July also work. November to March is effectively out: most boats stop and the lake is rough or icy.
Can I see the lighthouse?
Yes, from the water, and on a clear day from the mainland shore. The tower is the only remaining structure on the island, and its top was damaged during World War II bombing practice. There is no way to walk up to it.
Do I need a national park pass?
No. West Sister Island is a national wildlife refuge, not a national park, so the America the Beautiful pass does not apply and there is nothing to pay. See the pass page if you are also visiting parks on the same trip.
What happens if I land anyway?
You risk arrest and a fine, and you disturb nesting birds that are protected by law. Wartime ordnance may also remain on the island. Stay on the boat.
