Spend a half‑day to see the 47 Ronin sites; add a quick visit to Sakoshi port if you have extra time.

Ako is a small coastal city in Hyōgo known for the 47 Ronin story. The main sights – Akō Castle ruins, Ōishi Shrine and the salt‑making museum – are within walking distance of Banshū‑Ako Station, so a half‑day is enough. A short walk or one‑stop train ride to Sakoshi adds a historic port feel.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Ako is low‑risk; main caution is late‑night train schedules and occasional slippery sidewalks near the harbor.
  • Last local trains leave around 22:00; plan return to station.
  • Castle reconstructions are from the 1950s; original keep was demolished in 1873.
