Kamloops sits where the North and South Thompson rivers meet, in the dry rain-shadow interior of British Columbia. Both the Trans-Canada Highway and the Coquihalla pass through, so most travellers see it as a break on the Vancouver–Banff drive or a gateway to Sun Peaks. The city itself is compact: a small downtown, riverfront parks, a wildlife park and grassland trails. Two nights covers the town; add a night for skiing or a day on the water.

Getting around

Downtown, Riverside Park and the art gallery are walkable. BC Transit buses cover the city but run infrequently; a car is the practical choice for the wildlife park, Lac du Bois and Sun Peaks. Taxis and Uber operate; the airport is west of downtown (drive time check).

Use ordinary city precautions: lock your car and keep bags out of sight. Main outdoor risks include summer heat, rattlesnakes in grassland, swift cold river water and winter highway conditions.
  • Summer is hot and dry; carry water on trails, and check for wildfire smoke or fire-related closures before heading out.
  • Rattlesnakes occur in Lac du Bois grasslands; watch your step.
  • The Coquihalla (Hwy 5) can become icy, snow-covered or impassable in winter; check DriveBC before setting out.
  • The Thompson River is swift and cold; Riverside Park's swimming area is not always patrolled.
