Ormond Beach sits at the north end of the Daytona Beach area, on a barrier island between the Atlantic and the Halifax River. It is quieter than Daytona Beach, with no beach driving at the northern end, and its sights are small: the Casements (Rockefeller's winter home), Tomoka State Park and the old plantation ruins. Most travellers use it as a low-key beach base and drive to Daytona or Ponce Inlet for bigger days out.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-95 and US-1 run through the city and A1A follows the beach. Votran is the Volusia County bus service and a one-day pass is about $3 (check current fare and timetables). The A1A Beachside Trolley runs along Atlantic Avenue in season (check dates).

Safety

A calm, low-crime beach town by Florida standards, but the real risks are water and weather: strong rip currents, summer lightning, and hurricanes from June to November. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Beach driving is not allowed at the northern end of Ormond Beach; check signs before you leave the sand.
  • Afternoon traffic builds around major intersections and the tourist strip, especially Saturday nights.
  • Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and lightning; hurricane season runs 1 Jun–30 Nov.
  • Crime varies by neighbourhood; tourist areas rarely see violent crime but theft happens. Keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight.
