Orăștie is a small Transylvanian town on the Mureș plain, 30 km from Deva and about 40 km from the Dacian fortress ruins at Sarmizegetusa Regia. The old centre is compact: a 1930s Orthodox church, a county ethnography museum and the low walls of a medieval fortress, all within a few minutes of each other. Most travellers use it as a bed for the Orăștie Mountains, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to cross on foot in about 15 minutes. Taxis cover the edge of town and the outlying guesthouses; there is no useful local bus for visitors. Trains stop at Orăștie station on the Deva–Sibiu line, but the station is away from the centre, so plan a taxi or a walk.

Watch out

Safety

Orăștie is a quiet town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are the unlit fortress ruins after dark, unmarked trails in the Orăștie Mountains and winter ice on pavements.
  • Some sights and guesthouses close or run short hours outside summer; call ahead rather than turning up.
  • The fortress is a ruin with low, unguarded walls — no barriers, no lighting after dark.
  • Cash is still normal in small shops and pensions; not every place takes a card.
  • If you are here for the Dacian fortresses, they are in the hills 40 km away and need a car or an organised trip.
