Yverdon-les-Bains is the second-largest town in Vaud, on the south shore of Lake Neuchâtel and roughly 30 minutes by train from Lausanne. It is a spa town with a 13th-century castle, a science-fiction museum and a 6,000-year-old standing-stone site. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop or a single night between Lausanne and Neuchâtel; the baths and the lake shore are the reason to stay longer.

The centre is small and flat: walk it. TRAVYS buses cover the town and the region roughly every 20 minutes between about 06:00 and 20:00. Trains run about hourly to Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, Bern, Fribourg, Biel and Zurich; the station is a 10-minute walk from the castle.

Safety

Yverdon is a safe, quiet Swiss town; the real risks are cold water and slippery lake paths, plus late-night quiet around the station. Keep an eye on your bag in the station area and don't swim outside marked zones.
  • Some spa and hotel listings in older guides are out of date: confirm opening and prices on the official site before you book.
  • The lake shore near the beaches is partly industrial; the nicer walking is along the canals and toward Clendy.
  • Swiss trains are punctual but the last connections to smaller places go early; check the last train before a late dinner.
