Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Hartlepool is a post-industrial port on the County Durham coast, 30 min by train from Middlesbrough and about 3 h from London on the direct Grand Central service. The reason to come is the marina: HMS Trincomalee, the oldest Royal Navy warship still afloat, plus the Headland old town and its 12th-century church. Two days covers it comfortably; one day works if you start early.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is walkable: railway station to marina about 15 min, marina to Headland about 15 min. Bus 1 runs every 15 min from Middlesbrough through Seaton Carew, the town centre and the north suburbs. Taxis are cheap for short hops; there is no bus station, buses stop along York Rd and Victoria Rd.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Durham

go

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Bus 24 from Hartlepool, about 90 min via Peterlee

Norman castle and cathedral; a full day on its own.

Stockton-on-Tees

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train via Thornaby, about 30 min

Riverside and market town; combine with Middlesbrough rather than a dedicated trip.

Darlington

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train via Thornaby or direct, about 40–50 min

Rail hub with a museum quarter; useful if you are changing trains anyway.

Bishop Auckland

go

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Train via Darlington, about 1 h 15 min

Auckland Castle and the Kynren summer shows; check show dates.

Barnard Castle

overnight

Door to door: 2 h+

Bus or train via Darlington, then bus, 2 h+

Too slow as a return day trip; sleep in Teesdale instead.

Chester-le-Street

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train via Newcastle or Thornaby, 1 h+

Cricket ground and a small centre; not worth the change.

Spennymoor

skip

Door to door: 2 h+

Bus via Durham, 2 h+

No rail link and little for a visitor.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Marina

Premier Inn and Travelodge beside the docks and the museum; best for a short stay with bags.

Town centre / railway station

Cheapest beds and the bus and rail links; 5–10 min walk to the marina.

Seaton Carew

Seafront hotel 3 miles south; only worth it if you want the beach.

Watch out

Safety

A normal British town; the real issues are cold water and crumbling sea defences, not crime. Keep to lit streets at night and do not walk out on Steetley Pier.
  • Some parts of the Headland breakwater walkway are crumbling: stay on the marked path.
  • Steetley Pier is not a public promenade and a section has been removed — do not walk out onto it.
  • The Grand Hotel closed in 2020 and its reopening has slipped; confirm before booking.
  • Beaches have plenty of sand at low tide but industrial remnants and cold water: no lifeguards outside summer.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for NCL: last Metro and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: railway station and town centre, marina and Jackson Dock, Headland and St Hilda's.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and prices (National Museum of the Royal Navy, Heugh Battery, Hartlepool Art Gallery) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tide and weather fixtures for the beach and breakwater so gates A–D can go green.
