Hartlepool
Give Hartlepool one full day, not a base: the marina museums and Headland old town are the trip. Sleep here only if you want a cheap coast stop.
Hartlepool is a post-industrial port on the County Durham coast, 30 min by train from Middlesbrough and about 3 h from London on the direct Grand Central service. The reason to come is the marina: HMS Trincomalee, the oldest Royal Navy warship still afloat, plus the Headland old town and its 12th-century church. Two days covers it comfortably; one day works if you start early.

Get around
The town is walkable: railway station to marina about 15 min, marina to Headland about 15 min. Bus 1 runs every 15 min from Middlesbrough through Seaton Carew, the town centre and the north suburbs. Taxis are cheap for short hops; there is no bus station, buses stop along York Rd and Victoria Rd.

Scams and watch-outs
- Some parts of the Headland breakwater walkway are crumbling: stay on the marked path.
- Steetley Pier is not a public promenade and a section has been removed — do not walk out onto it.
- The Grand Hotel closed in 2020 and its reopening has slipped; confirm before booking.
- Beaches have plenty of sand at low tide but industrial remnants and cold water: no lifeguards outside summer.
A normal British town; the real issues are cold water and crumbling sea defences, not crime. Keep to lit streets at night and do not walk out on Steetley Pier.
