Tirupati is the pilgrimage capital of Andhra Pradesh, and almost everything here is built around one thing: darshan at the Sri Venkateswara Temple on the Tirumala hills, roughly 50,000 pilgrims a day. The town sits in the foothills; the temple is 20 km and 1,000 m up. Plan around the queue, not the sightseeing.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws and TTD buses cover the town; buses run from Tirupati to Alipiri and up to Tirumala. The Alipiri footpath (3,550 steps, 3–4 h) and the shorter Srivaari Mettu route are walked, with free luggage transfer from Alipiri. Private cars need a hill permit.

Watch out

Safety

Safe for tourists, including solo women in the temple areas, but the real risks are heat on the climb, darshan touts and pickpockets in dense queue halls. Keep valuables in the temple lockers.
  • Darshan is by token or paid ticket; without one you may wait many hours. Book on the official TTD site only — touts sell worthless slips.
  • No alcohol, smoking or non-vegetarian food on Tirumala; the hill is vegetarian and dry.
  • Phones, cameras, leather and large bags are barred inside the temple; use the free lockers.
  • April–June hits 40 °C (104 °F) and the walk up is exposed; start the climb before dawn.
  • Laddu counter queues are long — buy at the counter on the hill, not from resellers.
