Celestún is a fishing village of about 8,400 people on the Gulf coast of western Yucatán, wrapped around the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve. The draw is a small boat through mangrove channels to see flamingos and other water birds, plus a wide, uncrowded beach. The town itself is plain; most travellers come for a morning or a single night from Mérida.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable: the beach, the bus terminal and the boat dock are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For the reserve you need a boat, taken from the dock south of the bridge on the Celestún side; boats are priced per boat, not per person, so share with other travellers. A car helps for Playa Agua and the road north, but is not needed for a one-night stay.

Watch out

Safety

Celestún is a small, low-crime village and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are the sun, mosquitoes, unguarded water and cash-only businesses. Keep to lit streets at night and don't leave valuables on the beach.
  • Boat tours are priced per boat (about M$1,500 (≈ US$85) in 2026 estimate): split the cost or ask the price before boarding.
  • Flamingo numbers are seasonal and shift with water levels; a morning trip is the best chance, and no operator can guarantee a set number of birds.
  • The Gulf beach has no lifeguards in most stretches; watch for currents and stingrays.
  • Bring cash: ATMs are limited and card acceptance is patchy outside hotels.
  • Mosquitoes are heavy around the mangroves at dusk; repellent matters.
