Äkäslompolo is a 600-person village on a lake in Kolari, Finnish Lapland, and the western gateway to Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. It shares the Ylläs fell with Ylläs village but sits a few kilometres from the downhill slopes, so it suits trail skiers, hikers and mountain bikers more than slope-first skiers. Trails run all year, with peaks in February–Easter, summer and the September ruska weeks.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk, but cabins are often a few kilometres out, so a car helps. In ski season a ski bus loops around the Ylläs fell, single ticket around €2. Long-distance coaches from Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Kolari, Enontekiö and Kemi stop in the village.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are cold, darkness and distance. In midwinter tell someone your trail plan, carry a charged phone and a headlamp, and do not rely on seasonal cafés being open.
  • Äkäslompolo is not on the downhill slopes: ski-in/ski-out means staying at Ylläs instead.
  • Many restaurants and cafés open only in season: check seasonal services before you count on them.
  • Midwinter brings polar night and very low temperatures; late spring can flood trails.
  • Winter tyres are required by law Dec–Feb if you drive.
