Kittilä is a municipality the size of a small country with 6,500 residents, one airport and two ski resorts inside it. Almost everything travellers book — hotels, restaurants, ski hire, nightlife — sits in Levi (Sirkka) or on the Ylläs side, not in the administrative village. Come in winter for skiing and auroras, in early summer for midnight sun and hiking in Pallas-Yllästunturi.

Getting around

Distances are long and buses are thin outside ski season. A rental car is the practical choice; book it with the flight, as airport stock runs out in peak weeks. In season, shuttle services run from KTT to Levi and to Ylläsjärvi/Äkäslompolo, often by advance booking. Taxis are app-bookable and can be priced as a fixed fare when you give the address.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold, darkness and distance: −30 °C is possible Dec–Feb, daylight is only a few hours around midwinter, and help is far away on backcountry trails. Tell someone your route.
  • Winter temperatures can fall below −30 °C: layers, face cover, and no long walks alone at night.
  • Off-season (May, Nov) many restaurants, lifts and activities close and buses stop running.
  • Aurora and husky trips sell out in peak weeks — book before you fly.
  • Alcohol is sold only in state Alko shops and licensed bars; village shops close early.
  • Reindeer on the roads at dusk: drive slowly.
