Baxter Springs is a small southeast Kansas town on the 13-mile Kansas stretch of Route 66, 22 km west of Joplin, Missouri. It has a mining and Civil War story, a restored 1930s service station that serves as the Kansas Route 66 visitor centre, and a local museum. There is no public transit and almost nothing open in the evening, so it works as a half-day stop on a drive rather than a place to sleep for several nights.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no local bus or rail service, and the sights sit 2–4 km apart along Military Avenue and US 166. Everything in town is a short drive; walking the old main street is fine but the cemetery and campground are too far on foot in summer heat.
