Tanum is a rural municipality on the Bohuslän coast, not a single town. Its UNESCO-listed Bronze Age and Iron Age rock carvings sit around Tanumshede, while the summer life is in the small harbour towns of Fjällbacka, Grebbestad and Hamburgsund. Most travellers see the carvings in a half day and stay one or two nights on the coast.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to link the carving panels, which are spread over several kilometres of countryside. Västtrafik trains stop at Tanum station, about 2 km from Tanumshede, and local buses serve the coast towns, but services are thin outside summer. Bicycles can be rented at the Vitlycke museum.

Watch out

Safety

Tanum is a low-crime rural area; the real risks are fast E6 traffic, slippery rocks at the carving panels and cold water on the coast. Emergency number is 112.
  • Do not touch or walk on the carvings; skin oils and wear damage them.
  • Many panels are painted red for visibility, but unpainted ones are hard to spot — go in low morning or evening sun.
  • Aspeberget's main panel is covered in winter for protection.
  • Coastal restaurants and campsites are seasonal; check opening before you book outside Jun–Aug.
  • The E6 is a fast main road with wildlife crossings; drive with headlights on.
