Sonsonate is southwestern El Salvador's transport hub: 73,000 people, a big chicken-bus terminal, and a colonial centre of low adobe houses around Rafael Campo Park. Coffee, dairy and sugar pay the bills. Holy Week here is among the country's most solemn, but on an ordinary week the city is a practical stop between San Salvador, Acajutla and the Ruta de las Flores rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. Chicken buses and taxis cover the rest; Terminal de Sonsonate on Calle a Nahuilingo has routes to almost anywhere in the country, with route numbers on signs hung from the ceiling. Restrooms cost about US$0.50. For Izalco, Acajutla or the Ruta de las Flores, take a bus from that terminal rather than a city taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Sonsonate is an ordinary working city, not a tourist zone: daytime in the centre and the market is fine, keep to lit streets after dark, and take registered taxis. The bigger risks are traffic, unlit pavements and Holy Week crowds.
  • Chicken buses are cheap but slow and crowded: keep bags on your lap and expect over 2 hours from San Salvador.
  • Semana Santa and the 25 Jan–2 Feb festivities fill every bed: book weeks ahead or stay in Santa Ana instead.
  • Rainy-season downpours flood streets quickly; carry a light rain shell May–Oct.
  • Use registered taxis or ride-hailing after dark; ask the fare before you get in.
  • The Museo del Ferrocarril and some churches keep irregular hours: check locally before travelling for them.
