Popayán is the white-walled colonial capital of Cauca, founded in 1537 and rebuilt after the 1983 earthquake. The historic centre is compact and walkable in a day; most travellers stop 2 nights between Cali and the Tierradentro or San Agustín route, or come for Holy Week.
