  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Gulf Shores is a small Alabama beach town (population about 5,000) on a strip of white sand between the Gulf and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is quieter and cheaper than the Florida panhandle beaches an hour east. Almost everything runs on a car: condos and beach houses line the sand, restaurants and shops sit along Highway 59 and Beach Blvd, and the best days mix beach time with Gulf State Park, Fort Morgan or a boat. Summer is hot, busy and expensive; spring and autumn are the sweet spot.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the default: the strip is about 8 miles end to end and sidewalks are patchy. Beach Blvd (Hwy 182) runs along the water, Canal Road (Hwy 180) along the Intracoastal, and Hwy 59 links both to the interstate. A shuttle runs $5 one-way rides between many hotels and night spots; call 251-923-8336 to arrange one. Bikes work on the back streets but not on Hwy 59.

Ferry is seasonal and weather-dependent; confirm sailings before you set out.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

West Beach Blvd (Hwy 182)

Beachfront condos and houses; walk to the sand, drive to dinner.

The T / Hwy 59 at the public beach

Closest to the main public beach, bars and restaurants; busiest and priciest.

Gulf State Park area

Campground, cabins and cottages plus a quieter beach 6 miles east of Hwy 59.

Fort Morgan Road (Hwy 180)

Remote beach houses and the ferry landing; 25 miles west of Hwy 59, so a car is essential.

Watch out

Safety

Gulf Shores is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are rip currents, summer heat and storms. Check the flag before swimming, keep valuables out of sight on the sand, and watch for drink drivers after dark on Hwy 59.
  • Rip currents: check the beach warning flag before you swim, and never swim alone.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; watch forecasts and know your refund terms.
  • Summer afternoon thunderstorms are routine; plan beach time for the morning.
  • Parking at the public beach fills by mid-morning in summer.
  • Alcohol is sold on Sundays in Gulf Shores, but some neighbouring counties are dry — check before you drive.

  2. Four sleep clusters with walking distances: West Beach, the T, Gulf State Park, Fort Morgan Road.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and prices (Gulf State Park, Fort Morgan, the zoo, the museum).
