Gulf Shores is a small Alabama beach town (population about 5,000) on a strip of white sand between the Gulf and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is quieter and cheaper than the Florida panhandle beaches an hour east. Almost everything runs on a car: condos and beach houses line the sand, restaurants and shops sit along Highway 59 and Beach Blvd, and the best days mix beach time with Gulf State Park, Fort Morgan or a boat. Summer is hot, busy and expensive; spring and autumn are the sweet spot.

Get around
A car is the default: the strip is about 8 miles end to end and sidewalks are patchy. Beach Blvd (Hwy 182) runs along the water, Canal Road (Hwy 180) along the Intracoastal, and Hwy 59 links both to the interstate. A shuttle runs $5 one-way rides between many hotels and night spots; call 251-923-8336 to arrange one. Bikes work on the back streets but not on Hwy 59.
