Charleston is West Virginia's capital and largest city, set in a steep Kanawha River valley at the junction of I-64, I-77 and I-79. It is the closest large city to New River Gorge National Park, about an hour east, and it is cheap by US city standards. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a base for the gorge rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city is linear along the Kanawha River and the hills make walking between neighbourhoods slow. Downtown itself is compact and walkable. KRT runs local buses; C&H Taxi covers the city. Expect one-way streets, sharp corners and steep grades — follow posted curve speeds, especially the first time.

Safety

Charleston is generally safe for visitors in the downtown and East End areas during the day and early evening. The real risks are driving: steep grades, ice in winter and deer on rural roads toward the gorge. Keep to lit streets at night and lock the car.
  • Steep, winding streets and shifting one-way grids downtown; turn-offs can be poorly signed.
  • Summer heat and humidity in the valley; afternoon thunderstorms.
  • Winter ice on hillside roads — check conditions before driving to the gorge.
  • Some riverside and industrial-edge blocks are quiet at night; stay near Capitol Street or the East End.
