Charleston is West Virginia's capital and largest city, set in a steep Kanawha River valley at the junction of I-64, I-77 and I-79. It is the closest large city to New River Gorge National Park, about an hour east, and it is cheap by US city standards. Get around
A car is the practical choice: the city is linear along the Kanawha River and the hills make walking between neighbourhoods slow. Downtown itself is compact and walkable. KRT runs local buses; C&H Taxi covers the city. Expect one-way streets, sharp corners and steep grades — follow posted curve speeds, especially the first time.
