Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
- Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
- Malta ↗Malta is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
- Malta ↗Traffic drives on the left; if you hire a car, expect narrow roads, heavy traffic and limited parking in the towns.
- Malta ↗Sockets are the UK three-pin type (Type G); bring the right adapter.
- Malta ↗Every licensed stay adds an environmental contribution per adult per night (€1.50 from 1 July 2026, capped per stay — check), collected by the hotel or host.
Cottonera is the Three Cities — Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea (L-Isla) and Bormla (Cospicua) — on the south side of the Grand Harbour, opposite Valletta. Birgu holds the fort, the Inquisitor's Palace and the Maritime Museum; Senglea's tip gives the classic view back at the capital. One day covers it on foot; a night here trades nightlife for empty streets and ferry views.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Walk. Birgu and Senglea are two peninsulas about 1 km each, joined by Bormla; buses do not run onto them. Ferries from Valletta land at Bormla dock, and a car is only useful for parking at the start of a peninsula.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: 20–30 min
Ferry from Bormla dock to Valletta, or bus from the peninsula edge
Ferry runs about every 30 min during the day; evening crossings are seasonal.
Door to door: 15–30 min
Ferry or dghajsa across the harbour
The crossing itself is the sight; sit on the open deck.
Mdina
goDoor to door: 1–1.5 h
Bus via Valletta, or taxi
Half a day; late afternoon light is best.
Sliema
cautionDoor to door: 45–60 min
Ferry to Valletta, then ferry or bus onward
Doable but eats the day; better as a separate base.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Birgu (Vittoriosa)
The pick: fort, museums, restaurants and the marina within a 10-min walk.
Senglea (L-Isla)
Quieter, cheaper, best harbour views from the tip; fewer places to eat at night.
Bormla (Cospicua)
Ferry dock and gateway between the peninsulas; mostly local housing, thin on hotels.

Watch out
Safety
- Buses stop at the edge of the peninsulas: expect a 10–20 min walk to the sights.
- Parking inside Birgu and Senglea is scarce and the lanes are a maze; park at the peninsula entrance.
- Church museum opening hours are erratic; treat any visit as a bonus, not a plan.
- Summer midday on the fort and waterfront has almost no shade.
