Beypore is a working port town at the mouth of the Chaliyar, not a resort strip. Its pull is the wooden uru shipyards, the stone pier that walks about a kilometre into the sea, and Malabar food. Hotels of international standard sit in Kozhikode, not here, so most travellers sleep in the city and come out for a morning or an evening.

Getting around

No local bus service in Beypore: walk between the beach, port and yard, and use autorickshaws for anything further. Autos are metered in theory but usually quoted — agree the fare first. Taxis run on flat rates, not meters, and are only worth it for Kozhikode or the airport.

Watch out

Safety

Beypore is a small, generally safe town; the real risks are the sea (no lifeguards, strong currents), dark and crowded stretches of the sea walk, and unquoted auto or taxi fares. Women travelling alone report occasional staring on the beach — cover up away from the sand and keep to lit areas after dark.
  • The sea walk (Pulimoott) is poorly lit after dark and crowded at sunset: go at first light and carry a torch.
  • Swimming is not safe here — strong currents and no lifeguards; stay on the sand.
  • Monsoon surf and rain close the beach experience from June to August.
  • Agree autorickshaw and taxi fares before you get in; meters are rarely used.
  • Alcohol is not sold openly in this part of Kerala; licensed venues are in Kozhikode.
  • Uru model prices vary widely by size and wood: compare two or three yards before buying.
