Port Talbot
Give Port Talbot one night, or a half-day between Swansea and Cardiff: Aberavon beach and Margam Park, then move on. Two nights only if you ride Afan.
Port Talbot is an industrial town of about 32,000 on Swansea Bay, on the London Paddington to Swansea main line. Most of its historic centre went in the 1960s and 1970s for the M4 and the steelworks, so the reasons to stop sit outside the town: Aberavon beach, Margam Country Park and the Afan Forest Park mountain-bike trails. It works as a cheap, well-connected base for Swansea, Neath and the Glamorgan coast, not as a sightseeing destination in itself.

Getting around
Port Talbot Parkway is on the South Wales main line: Swansea about 20 min, Cardiff about 40 min, London Paddington about 2 h 40 min. Local buses run from the town centre to Aberavon and Margam; a car is much easier for Margam Park and the Afan valley, where trailheads and car parks are spread out. The promenade and beach are walkable from Sandfields but not from the station.

Safety
- The steelworks dominates the skyline and can smell; it is a working plant, not a sight with a visitor centre.
- Afan Forest Park trailheads are 4 miles north of town with limited buses: without a car or a bike transfer, plan the day around a taxi.
- Margam Stones Museum opens only part of the week and by appointment in winter: check before you go.
- Beach and promenade weather changes fast; wind and rain come in off Swansea Bay with little warning.
- Some Station Road pubs are loud and basic; ask prices before ordering in the dive bars.
