Tofino is a former logging and fishing village of about 2,500 people on Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is Canada's surf capital, a whale-watching and sea-kayaking base, and the gateway to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Almost everyone arrives by car on Highway 4, and the town is small enough to walk once you park.

Getting around

The town is walkable. A multi-use bike and foot path runs along Highway 4 down to Cox Bay and connects toward Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Ucluelet, with one narrow 1.2-km gap south of the park. BC Transit runs between Ucluelet and Tofino daily, and a free seasonal shuttle with a surfboard rack runs hourly from late June to early September between downtown and Long Beach. Taxis and the Whistle ride-hailing app cover short hops; water taxis reach Meares and Vargas islands.

Watch out

Safety

Tofino is a small, safe town; the real risks are the cold Pacific, the twisty highway and summer crowds. Lock your car, keep valuables out of sight and check surf and weather forecasts before you commit.
  • Highway 4 west of Port Alberni is twisty and narrow; drive it in daylight and expect slow traffic in summer.
  • Parking in town is paid and limited, with few overnight spots; use the Honk app and read the signs.
  • Summer hotels and campsites sell out weeks ahead; walk-in beds are rare in July and August.
  • Winter storms close beaches and some businesses; check conditions before you go.
  • Wildfire smoke can cut visibility and air quality in late summer; check BC Wildfire Service and DriveBC.
  • Cold water year-round: surf in a 5 mm wetsuit, and never turn your back on the surf.
