Gladstone is an industrial port city on Queensland's central coast, roughly halfway between Bundaberg and Rockhampton. It has the state's largest natural harbour, a marina with reef and Curtis Island ferries, botanic gardens, and free tours of the alumina refinery, smelter and power station. Most travellers pass through on the Bruce Highway; those who stop come for the reef trips, the industrial curiosity, or the beaches at Tannum Sands 20 minutes south.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city spreads along a hill between the centre and the harbour, and Tannum Sands, the gardens and the industrial lookouts are all a drive away. Hire cars are available at the airport and downtown. Local buses run but are limited; taxis are available. Cycling works on the harbourside and the TurtleWay path, but the hill and the highways make it less pleasant elsewhere.
